In Spring, 2023, Arizona was awash with wildflowers. One of the most popular spots was Picacho Peak State Park just north of Tucson along I-10. Waves of yellow poppies undulated along the eastern slopes as viewed from the highway. Except, when I arrived, it was dark, and I couldn't see them. Furthermore (this is where you will see that I am a wildflower newbie), all of the poppies were closed! Are these new ones? Did the ones we had been hearing about already die? A quick conversation with another early bird who was clearly a wildflower pro cleared it up for me - the poppies close at night and reopen as the sun rises! Hmmm. No poppy pictures for me this morning. What else have we got here?
Oh, wait. Look at this green carpet. I have never seen the desert floor look this green in my life, and I'd lived or visited here every winter and summer since I was born. No doubt this kind of thing happens when you spend most of your time indoors, as well. COVID-19 got me out of my house, and out into nature, and I have never looked back. Arizona truly has one of the most fascinating, ever-changing landscapes imaginable. It truly is a living desert.
